Whether you consider YouTube a social media platform or not, there is no denying that it has been a key driver of the rise of influencer marketing. Creators are using YouTube as a stepping stone in creating businesses that thrive on their personality and connection to their audience. In the past year, YouTube has been criticized by creators. Creators arguably made the platform what it is today, but don’t feel supported by the organization. YouTube’s policies have made it harder and harder for channels to be eligible for monetization. Some channels even called out YouTube for viewer suppression and noted that the recommended video algorithm began favoring big corporate players like the late night specials. Let’s be honest we’ve all fallen into the carpool karaoke trap.
This year, YouTube rolled out the “Channel Membership” for creators to increase their opportunity. To be eligible the creator must have 100,000 subscribers or more, be over 18 years old and be members of the YouTube Partner Program. Opting for a channel membership opens up an additional revenue generating avenue for creators. Viewers purchase a membership at $4.99/month to unlock access to public badges, emojis, and access to creator perks. Creators have the flexibility to customize their perks, from exclusive live streams, additional videos, shout-outs, news of upcoming events, early access to ticket sales and other things.YouTube seems to be making an effort to support their creators. Taking this step to provide creators with tools and resources to not only increase revenue but also provide additional opportunities to engage with fans. Not sure how YouTube can fit into your marketing strategy?
